Women on Waves is a Dutch non-profit organization concerned with women's human rights. Its mission is to prevent unwanted pregnancy and unsafe abortions throughout the world.
Every 8 minutes somewhere in the world a woman dies needless as a result of illegal, unsafe abortion.
In response to this violation of womens human rights and medical need, Women on Waves sails to countries where abortion is illegal. This is done at the invitation of local women's organizations.
With the use of a ship, early medical abortions can be provided safely, professionally and legally. Women on Waves aims to prevent unsafe abortions and empower women to exercise their human rights to physical and mental autonomy, by combining free healthcare services and sexual education with advocacy.
# Every year nearly 1/4 of all pregnant women worldwide choose to have an abortion (circa 42 million annually).
# Approximately 25% of the world population lives in countries with highly restrictive abortion laws, mostly in Latin America, Africa and Asia. # The legal status of abortion makes little difference to overall levels of the estimated abortion incidence (making it illegal does not reduce the number of abortions).
# Where illegal, it is primarily women without financial means who take recourse to unsafe abortion methods, resulting in the death of a woman every 7 minutes. # 20 million of the 42 million abortions performed annually are unsafe.
Worldwide 70 000 women die each year from complications following unsafe abortions. Unsafe abortion is, therefore, a leading cause of the almost 600 000 maternal deaths estimated to occur each year. Globally one in eight pregnancy-related deaths, an estimated 13%, are due to an unsafe abortion.
The best and safest way a woman can do an abortion herself until the 9th week of pregnancy is with the use of two medicines called Mifepristone (also known as the abortion pill, RU 486, Mifegyn, Mifeprex), and Misoprostol (also known as Cytotec, Arthrotec, Oxaprost , Cyprostol, Mibetec, Prostokos or Misotrol).
