When Chris Leung was a boy growing up in Sugar Land, he was drawn to the chimes of the neighborhood ice cream vendor. "I always wanted something off the truck, but my parents wouldn't let me," he said. "But when I got one, it was so special."
That childhood hunger for ice cream novelties has developed into an adult passion for the most elegant frozen scoops. The pastry chef known for turning out killer restaurant desserts and intricate, multicourse sugar highs has recently launched an ice cream business already causing foodies to shiver with delight. Cloud 10 Creamery, a partnership between Leung and Houston businessman Christopher Balat, launched only two months ago but quickly has earned solid culinary kudos. Dense, almost airless, enamel glossy and vividly flavored, Cloud 10's lush scoops are putting ice cream lovers on cloud nine.
The business currently boasts a catalog of about 40 flavors that include mango/cilantro, white chocolate tobacco, sesame oil, pandan and Vietnamese coffee. Underbelly and Hay Merchant immediately bought into Leung's chemistry; so did food trucks Phamily Bites, Koagie Hots and the Modular. Sundance Cinemas in downtown Houston now is selling cups of Cloud 10.
