Smart technology saves energy during quick breaks when it sense no one is in front of the computer.
A new app called ‘GreenCam’ utilizes the webcam to detect if someone is in front of the computer, and subsequently puts the computer in sleep mode when no one is there. The free desktop app aims to make saving energy easier when the user needs to step away from the computer for a short time, such as taking a quick coffee break, going to the bathroom, or picking up something from the photocopier.
GreenCam was created by Brazilian company Ecobeneficios, and it’s estimated that the app can save a company of 200 employees around $130 a month (if each staff member steps away from the computer an hour a day).
