We all need some kind of motivation, to cut down on food, and start living a healthy lifestyle. However, can a tax on unhealthy food and drinks would motivate you to switch to healthy options? According to a study by the British Heart Foundation’s Health Promotion Research Group, 35% tax on sugar-sweetened drinks led to a 26% decline in sales. Thus, a 20% tax on sugary drinks in the U.S. would reduce obesity levels by 3.5%. A similar tax in the U.K. could cut up to 2,700 heart disease deaths a year. On the other side, the food industry argues that the entireindustry is focused on continuing to give hard-pressed families great tasting food at an affordable price. An addition of 20% to food prices seems discouraging and far-fetched.
Is it necessary to levy a 20% fat tax to gain control of expanding waistlines worldwide? Would you stop indulging in a chilled glass of an aerated drink, because of a price hike? Would a ‘Fat Tax’ restrain you from eating junk food? Pour in your thoughts below!
