Do indie rockers know shit about fashion? Judge for yourself. Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast fame was recently tapped by Urban Outfitters to design clothes for a new fashion line meant to reflect her ‘hipster chic’ style. “Bethany Cosentino for Urban Renewal” is out this week and in this clip, you can see Cosentino explaining some of the reference points for the line — mainly “Clueless” and her mom’s Stevie Nicks obsession. There are some direct pulls from ’90s culture all over the place actually, with outfits directly taken from “Clueless” but also “Seinfeld” and “Empire Records.” There’s also the cropped varsity jacket which is more or less inspired by the one often associated with “The Late Show with David Letterman.” The concept of someone like a weed-smoking valley girl like Cosentino designing a fashion line seems bait for ridicule, but these honestly aren’t so bad, although the outfits that are direct lifts from pop culture (most particularly “The Cher Dress”) might be better for a Halloween costume rather than a night of rolling with the homies.
