If you’ve ever wondered about the history of the streets as you walk around them, a new app utilises your mobile’s ability to tell where exactly you are in an area, and play you an audio clip relevant to that area. The mobile app is called Streetstories, and it comes from the British newspaper The Guardian.
The app, which is available for both iPhone and Android, only works in one area, King’s Cross in London which is where The Guardian‘s offices are located, and it plays various stories and anecdotes about the area as you walk around. The video below gives a good idea of how the app works.
It could be a nice app for tourists, but also for residents alike, who may not know the history of the area, as there are over seventy stories to listen to, such as a clip of Harry Potter’s experience at St Pancras, or information about the area in Victorian times.
You can also listen to the stories without being in the area, but I imagine it would be most effective when you’re actually there in the spots being described. The app might help you feel more engaged with the area you’re walking around in, and makes a nice alternative to listening to music, blocking out the sounds of the area as you walk through it.
There’s no word yet if there are plans to expand the service to other areas of London or even the country, but if this app becomes popular then there’s no reason why the Guardian couldn’t replicate it elsewhere.
