Fourteen-year-old Leon Overwheel, who lives in New York, has constructed a printer out of LEGO blocks which he dubbed the LEGO Mindstorms NXT Printer . Using only gray, red and white LEGO bricks, Overwheel’s printer resembles a toy version of a drafting printer. The machine utilizes three motors to control an attached pen that draws objects and messages. Touch and color sensors are also at work to help calibrate the robot and tell the motors where to deposit the pen’s strokes as well as when to stop. Overwheel first imports each image as a .PBM file before sending it to the printer resulting in an image that looks like a pixelated version of the original, drawn in marker. He has also created a plethora of other inventions, including a LEGO robotic arm.
