In a deal with U.S. regulators, BP this summer plans to restart deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico on 10 wells in exchange for tougher safety rules, British media reported Sunday.
The Market................BP has been able to drill closer to shore, the big money is in deep water. The government has been trying to get BP and others to actually drill in the areas already leased to them in shallow water close to shore. The moratorium on deep water drilling was to force them to have a plan to control blowouts in deep water. Prior to this there was no plan, they just said " what could go wrong" and drilled away. We found out what could go wrong. BP had no plan in place to repair a blow out at those depths, they just winged it and destroyed a big part of the Gulf in the process. Government has now said that they had to have a disaster plan before opening up the oil deposits a mile down under huge pressure, is that too much to ask ? Just a plan in event of a disaster that we know has and is likely to happen again.
