Top fashion designer Miuccia Prada has achieved the impossible: creating a brogue-based shoe which has no aesthetic value whatsoever. The Prada Brogue, which was launched in Milan last September, is still selling like hot cakes in all the overpriced boutiques of London. “Our customers have really embraced them,” says Helen Attwood, buying manager for shoes at Selfridges, who is expecting another delivery next week. “They’re directional but wearable.” Indeed. No-one could argue that these brogue-platform-plimsoll-espadrille hybrids are directional, but precisely which direction are they headed? A lunatic asylum on the Moon? The brogues have many devotees among high fashion circles. Katie Chung, of menswear brand Woo-youngmi, is also a fan. “They’re a classic men’s shoe with a twist,” says Chung. “That’s what makes them great.”

The Chap asks: why does everything have to be “classic with a twist”? If designers are incapable of creating new things, then please leave the old things alone. We are quite happy with them as they are, and this sort of nonsense only degrades the standing of ancient and noble items of clothing such as the brogue. And here’s the real twist: the Prada Brogue costs £510.
